Takegawara Hot Spring photograph The first building founded in 1879 had a roof of bamboo which was later reconstructed with tile, and this is where the name Takegawara (bamboo tile) came from. The present building constructed in 1938 with a Chinese luxurious gabled roof in front is now a symbol of Beppu Hot Spring. Its high-ceilinged lobby where you can sit and relax after bathing reminds of the beginnings of the Showa period. About the famous sand bath, you lie face up on the sand putting Yukata on, while the attendant covers you all the way up to your neck with warm sand heated up by thermal springs.

Takegawara Onsen was recently ranked in the top 20 for onsen day trips and spas by the TripAdvisor Travellers' Choice awards.

The award is given using the original algorithm based on the number of positive Japanese reviews on TripAdvisor for onsen day trip facilities in Japan for the year from October 2018 - September 2019.
