Beppu Hatto

The typical eight hot spring-areas in the city are collectively called Beppu Hatto.
Each area had flourished as an individual resort primarily; some of them have a long history tracing back to the beginning of 8th century.

From the year of Meiji downward, we have made an improvement following maintenance of transportation. In the year of Taisho it was called kBeppu Jyuttol, adding kYufuinl and kTsukaharal to the present eight. Later the namekBeppu Hattol was settled in 1924 when the City of Beppu was formed as a result of several mergers of smaller surrounding towns and villages.

Hamawaki Hot Spring
It is the birthplace of Beppu Hot Springs. Its name gHamawakih was derived from the hot springs which gushed naturally from the beach (Hama). In the beginning of Kamakura period Asami Hachiman (Shrine) was founded. Later in the year of Edo this area rapidly developed intos a port town, a temple town, a hot spring resort and an important passageway between land and sea. The old-fashioned inns remain standing along the quaint streets which retain traces of a red-light district of the Meiji and Taisho period. Built in 1991 as a part of redevelopment project, gUtopia Hamawakih, a Multipurpose Sanatorium, is transforming the townfs ancient flavor to a new, modern ambiance.


Beppu Hot Spring
It was already mentioned in the old book Iyonokuni Topography as gHayami-no-yuh and later in the year of Edo, actually got into the limelight as a hot spring resort. There has been an increase in the number of fountainheads, hot spring facilities and accommodations following the construction of Beppu Harbor, the opening of the Nippo Main Line and Betsudai Railway as well as the introduction of digging technique in the year of Meiji. Furthermore, with the substantial hot spring facilities constructed in this district, including Takegawara Hot Spring - the symbol of Beppu Hot Spring, it became the heart of Beppu Hatto in the year of Taisho and Showa. In every April Hot Spring Festa takes place mainly in this area and involves all the citizens of Beppu.





Kamegawa Hot Spring
It is written in the old book Toyonokuni Travelogues, gThere is a hot spring in Satoya. Salty Spring. Satoya village is also called Kamegawa village.h It is famous for the natural sand bath with abundant hot springs gushing out of the beach. Once it flourished as a north entrance of Beppu, a traffic point for Buzen Kokura and a health resort for weary travelers. It also holds Beppu Beach Sand Bath on a corner of Shoningahama Park where Ippen Shonin has reputedly landed on, and in around various hospitals and treatment facilities utilizing thermal waters.


Kannawa Hot Spring
It is the very hot spring of symbolic view above all Beppu Hatto with tremendous steam rising. In the year of Kamakura the rough hell called gKuberiyu-no-ih was developed by Ippen Shonin. The area around gMushiyu (Steam Bath)h which he founded has now become the heart of Kannawa and has flourished with many public baths, accommodations and souvenir shops lined along the narrow and winding streets. Also the inns for rent peculiar to Kannawa remain standing to take in the guests from afar.





Kankaiji Hot Spring


The place was discovered in the year of Kamakura. It is written in Bungokokushi, a historical book of the Edo period that many people visited Kankaiji for its grand spectacle despite the terrible inconvenience. It has a high altitude (150m) resulting in views of the best scenery above all Beppu Hatto. It developed rapidly after the big fire of 1931, and now contains many large resort hotels with the amusement facilities utilizing thermal energy for power generation.



Horita Hot Spring
Horita Onsen, formerly called Tateishi-no-yu, flourished as a hot spring resort in the Edo period. It was a traffic point for Yufuin, Hita and/or Dazaifu for travelers to recover from the fatigue of journey with abundant hot springs which were also supplied to the city. You will enjoy lazy drifts of sulfurous steam emitted from every rice field and valley.





Shibaseki Hot Spring
It is said that in 895 the Emperor Daigo, in 1044 the Emperor Goreisen visited here to soak in the therapeutic waters. Its name gShibasekih was derived from the fossil firewood (Shiba) found there in the year of Edo.
Municipal Shibaseki Hot Spring was reopened@as@Fureai-Yasuragi (heart-warming) Hot Spring in April 1997 with two baths of different temperature, an open-air bath, a steam bath and a newly-built family bath. With a nice woodland trail, it was designated as a National Health Hot Spring Resort with Kannawa and Myoban alike.


Myoban Hot Spring
The thick smoke rising from the thatched gYunohana (Sinter) Hutsh will please your eyes. It has developed with the extraction of Japanfs best alum both in quality and quantity.
As well as Sinter, a special product of this area@-@Zabon (Shaddock) Bath gives off a sweet fragrance and makes skin lustrous has also become famous.
