The first building founded in 1879 had a roof of bamboo which was later reconstructed with tile, and this is where the name Takegawara (bamboo tile) came from. The present building constructed in 1938 with a Chinese luxurious gabled roof in front is now a symbol of Beppu Hot Spring. Its high-ceilinged lobby where you can sit and relax after bathing reminds of the beginnings of the Showa period. About the famous sand bath, you lie face up on the sand putting Yukata on, while the attendant covers you all the way up to your neck with warm sand heated up by thermal springs.
