Tsurumi Peak reportedly had a major eruption 1100 years ago, and even today steam continues to seep out of the volcanic mouth behind the peak. It includes an observation deck above Beppu Bay from which visitors can view not just Beppu City, but Oita City, Kunisaki Peninsula and even Shikoku.
