The volcanic mountain of Tsurumi Peak is part of the Aso-Kuju National Park, and offers a dynamic view of the surrounding Tsurumi Mountain Range. Tsurumi Peak reportedly had a major eruption 1100 years ago, and even today steam continues to seep out of the volcanic mouth behind the peak. In addition to Beppu City in the valley below, visitors can view wild azaleas and cherry blossoms in the spring, lush verdant foliage in the summer, fiery auburn leaves in autumn and sparkling white snow in the winter. The Tsurumi Peak Mountain Climbing Contest is held in the spring, famous for being the only mountain climbing contest in Japan where climbers trek their entire ways to the top--from 0m-1,375m above sea level--without traveling on any major roads.
