| Located at the southern tip of Beppu
City, this hot spring was one of the first in Beppu. Its name,
which means "Beach Spring," was derived from the hot
water that springs up from the beach. Over the years this area
rapidly developed into a harbor town, a hot spring resort, a
temple town and an important passageway between land and sea.
While it currently preserves the remains of the Meiji and Taisho
Periods, it's also modernizing its look through redevelopment
projects such as the construction of Utopia Hamawaki, a multipurpose
recreation center. |

| This area has been famous for its
abundant alum supplies used as bathing supplements since the
Meiji Period, and was developed into a health resort when alum-mining
operations were thriving. White steam rises from the thatched
roof of Yu-no-Hanagoya (hot spring flower hut), and sulfurous
air saturates the scenic vicinity providing Myoban Hot Spring
with a therapeutic atmosphere. Visitors can also witness the
spectacular view of the Beppu Myoban Bridge--the largest arched
bridge in Asia--along the Oita Expressway. Yu-no-Hanagoya started
producing natural bath ingredients over 250 years ago and continues
to do so today. |

vast amounts of steam gushing forth typify the scenery of Beppu.
In addition to regular baths, facilities include a variety of
other baths such as saunas, which utilize the heat from the
hot spring, attracting large amounts of tourists seeking rest
and relaxation. The view of Kannawa hot spring's rising vapor

| Since ancient times, the rich hot
spring of Horita has been an important midpoint on the roads
to Yufuin, Hita, Dazaifu and other cities, and thrived in the
past as a resting spot for road-weary travelers. The scene of
gas fuming out of the fields and valleys serves as a reminder
of the tremendous power of nature. This rich hot spring acts
as the city's hot water supply. Located next to an Oita Expressway
interchange, the town's role as a rest spot continues even today. |
