Located at the southern tip of Beppu City, this hot spring was one of the first in Beppu. Its name, which means "Beach Spring," was derived from the hot water that springs up from the beach. Over the years this area rapidly developed into a harbor town, a hot spring resort, a temple town and an important passageway between land and sea. While it currently preserves the remains of the Meiji and Taisho Periods, it's also modernizing its look through redevelopment projects such as the construction of Utopia Hamawaki, a multipurpose recreation center.

This area first became famous as a hot spring resort in the Edo Period, and has since improved its hot spring facilities and become the center of Beppu as the city expanded with the construction of the harbor and the opening of the Nippo Line and Betsudai Railway. This area has been famous for its abundant alum supplies used as bathing supplements since the Meiji Period, and was developed into a health resort when alum-mining operations were thriving. White steam rises from the thatched roof of Yu-no-Hanagoya (hot spring flower hut), and sulfurous air saturates the scenic vicinity providing Myoban Hot Spring with a therapeutic atmosphere. Visitors can also witness the spectacular view of the Beppu Myoban Bridge--the largest arched bridge in Asia--along the Oita Expressway. Yu-no-Hanagoya started producing natural bath ingredients over 250 years ago and continues to do so today.

This hot spring used to be an ancient health resort, the atmosphere of which remains even today. The vast amounts of steam gushing forth typify the scenery of Beppu. In addition to regular baths, facilities include a variety of other baths such as saunas, which utilize the heat from the hot spring, attracting large amounts of tourists seeking rest and relaxation. The view of Kannawa hot spring's rising vapor clouds are drawing national acclaim, placing second next to Mt. Fuji in the Japan Broadcasting Corporation's TV program, "Most Desired Scenes to Preserve in the 21st Century."

Over the years large hotels were erected in this area, changing Kankaiji Hot Spring, which is located at an altitude of 150m and filled with rich waters and beautiful scenery, from a simple curative bathing area to the luxurious modernized hot spring it is today. The area has become famous for its serene cherry blossoms and luxurious modern hot spring facilities. Tsurumi Peak can be seen in the background of this beautiful natural environment, and the spectacular cityscape below can be enjoyed both day and night

Since ancient times, the rich hot spring of Horita has been an important midpoint on the roads to Yufuin, Hita, Dazaifu and other cities, and thrived in the past as a resting spot for road-weary travelers. The scene of gas fuming out of the fields and valleys serves as a reminder of the tremendous power of nature. This rich hot spring acts as the city's hot water supply. Located next to an Oita Expressway interchange, the town's role as a rest spot continues even today.
