There is concern about a large earthquake which may occur in the southeast and the south sea area (Tonankai and Nankai area) of Japan having its epicenter between off Shizuoka Prefecture and off Shikoku in the beginning of this century.
The Central Disaster Prevention Conference designated 652 cities, towns and villages nationwide as the Tonankai/Nankai Earthquake prevention promotion areas, including 22 coastal cities, towns and villages of Oita Prefecture. Beppu is one of them. If it occurs, it is predicted that Beppu will be hit by an earthquake with a seismic intensity of 5 and a 1-3 meter tsunami.
Tsunamis will reach the coastal areas of Beppu within one and a half hours after the earthquake occurs. People living in the coastal areas must be aware of the earthquake/tsunami information to make an early evacuation. |

If a serious earthquake occurs along the coasts of Japan, the tsunami warning will be announced two or three minutes after the earthquake.
The height of tsunamis depends on the seismic scale (magnitude) or how it occurs.
There are two different ways of warnins: "tsunami warning" and "tsunami advisory", depending on the anticipated height of tsunami waves ("warning" for more serious tsunamis and "advisory" for the less ). Carefully check the tsunami information.

An earthquake risen at the bottom of the sea pushes waters to land. This phenomenon is called "Tsunami".

●"The height of tsunamis" announced by the Meteorological Agency shows how high the sea level rises around the coast.
●The height of tsunamis may possibly become several times higher than anticipated depending on the seacoast/bay topography.
●Tsunamis rise up to land whose height may possibly reach several tens of meters. This height is called "ascending height".

| If you feel a strong or
longlasting earthquake,
|
| Immediately leave the seaside and evacuate to a safety place, such as a hill. |
| If a tsunami advisory
is announced,
|
| Immediately leave,
if you are on the seaside. |
| If a tsunami warning
is announced,
|
| Immediately leave the seaside
and evacuate to a safety place,
such as a hill.
|
|
 |
・ If a tsunami warning is announced, immediately leave
the seaside and evacuate to a safety place, such as a hill,
even if you do not feel tremors.
・ Obtain correct information through radio or TV.
・ Even if it is an advisory, and not a warning, stop swimming or
fishing.
・ Tsunamis come one after another. Do not get close to the sea
until the tsunami warning/advisory is lifted.
|
|

Tsunamis can hit
without an ebb tide.
The tide does not always ebb before tsunamis. It sometimes depends on how the earthquake occurs or the topography around the epicenter.
|
 |
Tsunamis come
one after another.
Tsunamis come one after another. So you cannot be relieved after the first one. Carefully check tsunami information, and do not get close to the sea until the warning/advisory is lifted.
